Description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Comprising three massifs, the Picos de Europa National Park is a site of mythical significance and immense cultural and natural wealth.
**BIOSPHERE RESERVE** In 2003, UNESCO recognized the natural value of the Picos de Europa, 85 years after the region was distinguished as Spain’s first National Park.
The origin of the name “Picos de Europa” is unknown, simply referred to as “Picos” by locals and neighboring mountain areas. Traditionally, the origin of the toponym is associated with the idea that the peaks were supposedly the first sight of European lands that sailors glimpsed when coming from America, rising through the mists of the Asturian coast.
