8-Day Crossing of Peneda-Gerês National Park

Discover one of Europe’s best kept secrets. Explore the mountains and rocky valleys surrounding the remote village of Castro Laboreiro, your base for three nights. In contrast to the rugged highlands, the tranquil forest and an ancient Roman bridge offer places to stop and dip your toes in crystal-clear waters. Next, head to the Peneda Sanctuary. Along the way, sweeping views open up in all directions and forest trails emerge beneath your feet. Occasionally, you might spot long-horned Cachena cattle and Garrano horses grazing freely on the surrounding slopes. The next day, explore the total protection zone, the heart of the National Park, hike Roman paths, traverse an untouched forest with hundreds of ancient trees, and take a dip in one of the crystal-clear waterfalls. On your last day in the Park, explore Soajo, its history, and the traditions that make this village and this mountain one of the most typical and authentic regions of the National Park. Finally, travel to the city of Porto and explore the city on your last day.

    DAY 1 – Welcome & Briefing

    • Arrival at Porto Airport; a team member will be waiting for you.

    • Private transfer to Castro Laboreiro.

    • Welcome briefing in Castro Laboreiro.

    • Accommodation in a 3★ hotel with breakfast in Castro Laboreiro.

    • Dinner on reservation.

     

    DAY 2 – Castro Laboreiro – Brandas & Inverneiras

    • Guided hike in Castro Laboreiro, one of Portugal’s most remote areas. (11.6 km; elevation –430 m | +475 m)

    • Packed lunch (included).

    • Visit to the Castro Laboreiro Museum.

    • Dinner on reservation.

    • Accommodation in a 3★ hotel with breakfast in Castro Laboreiro.

     

    DAY 3 – Peneda Mountains – Faith & Mountain

    • Transfer to the Peneda mountain range (20 minutes).

    • Visit to one of Portugal’s most important mountain sanctuaries.

    • Guided circular hike in the Peneda mountains (11 km; elevation –510 m | +565 m).

    • Packed lunch (included).

    • Transfer back to Castro Laboreiro (20 minutes).

    • Dinner on reservation.

    • Accommodation in a 3★ hotel with breakfast in Castro Laboreiro.

     

    DAY 4 – Serra do Gerês – Total Protection Zone

    • Transfer to Campo do Gerês.

    • Guided circular hike, following a Roman road and crossing the Albergaria Forest (11 km; elevation –310 m | +265 m).

    • Packed lunch (included).

    • Transfer to Ponte da Barca.

    • Dinner on reservation.

    • Accommodation in a 3★ hotel with breakfast in Ponte da Barca.

     

    DAY 5 – Active Rest Day

    • Suggested flat, easy riverside walk along the Vez River and visit to Arcos de Valdevez (Biosphere Reserve).

    • Transfer to Arcos de Valdevez (10 minutes).

    • Guided linear walk along the Vez River (10 km; elevation –110 m | +165 m).

    • Packed lunch (included).

    • Leisurely visit to the historic town of Arcos de Valdevez.

    • Transfer to Ponte da Barca.

    • Accommodation in a 3★ hotel in Ponte da Barca.

     

    DAY 6 – Soajo Mountains – History & Tradition

    • Transfer to Soajo (25 minutes).

    • Guided circular hike in the Soajo mountains (10 km; elevation –410 m | +365 m).

    • Scenic traditional picnic with mountain views.

    • Stroll through the beautiful, historic village of Soajo.

    • Transfer to Ponte da Barca (25 minutes).

    • Accommodation in a 3★ hotel in Ponte da Barca.

     

    DAY 7 – Porto – The “Invincible City”

    • Transfer to Porto (1 hour 10 minutes).

    • Check-in at your hotel in Porto.

    • Free day to explore the city (suggested itinerary and local restaurant tips provided).

    DAY 8 – Transfer & End of Trip

    • Transfer to the airport or your next destination.
