Peneda Gerês National Park (Portugal)

In the extreme northwest of Portugal, between Alto Minho and Trás-os-Montes, Serra da Peneda together with Serra do Gerês, constitute the only Portuguese protected area classified as a National Park. It is a world in which human activity harmoniously integrates with Nature, preserving very old values and traditions that are clearly evident in the community villages of Pitões das Júnias and Tourém. In all shades of green, the exuberant vegetation that covers the mountains includes a holly forest, unique in the country, and endemic species such as the Gerês lily, which brightens the fields with its blue-violet tones. The terrain, which is very mountainous, is crossed by rivers and streams that run quickly and fall in waterfalls, finding placidity in the reservoirs of dams such as Caniçada, Vilarinho das Furnas or Portela do Homem. The landscapes are stunning. Watch carefully, as you might spot a roe deer (a symbol of the Park) or its predator, the Iberian wolf. More common are the garrons, small wild horses that run freely through the hills. You will probably also find Barrosã and Cachena cattle and the dark-haired Castro Laboreiro dogs, guarding the herds that, at the
rhythm of the seasons, move between mild and winter seasons.

    PROGRAM

    DAY 1 – WELCOME BRIEFING

    Accommodation, where a member of Montesa will welcome you. You will be duly informed about your first day of hiking as well as the entire proposed week, you will also receive documents about the region and you will be able to resolve all your doubts.

    Accommodation in Castro Laboreiro

    DAY 2 – CASTRO LABOREIRO

    • Guided walk in Castro Laboreiro. (11.6 km |+645 m).
    • Lunch box.
    • Dinner at local restaurant.

    Accommodation in a 3*Hotel at Castro Laboreiro.

    DAY 3 – PENEDA MOUNTAIN

    • Transfer to Peneda.
    • Guided circular walk in Peneda. (10km | +720 m).
    • Lunch box.
    • Visit the Peneda Lady Santuary.
    • Transfer to Arcos de Valdevez.

    Accommodation in a 3*Hotel.

    DAY 4 – SOAJO MOUNTAIN

    • Guided walk in a Soajo. (10 km | +410 m)
    • Picnic overlooking the mountains.
    • Visit the typical village of Soajo, the museum and the granaries.

    Accommodation in a 3*Hotel at Arcos de Valdevez.

    DAY 5 – YELLOW MOUNTAIN

    • Transfer to Yellow Mountain.
    • Guided walk in the Yellow Mountain (16 km | +810 m)
    • Lunch box.

    Accommodation in a 3*Hotel at Gerês village.

    DAY 6 – GERÊS MOUTAIN

    • Guided walk in a total protected area Mata da Albergaria (8 km | +110 m)
    • Picnic overlooking the mountains.
    • Tour through the National Park to admire some lagoons and waterfalls.

    DAY 7 – PITÕES DAS JÚNIAS

    Finally, we arrive at the other end of the National Park. We know that the journey is long but unforgettable, however, Pitões das Júnias is the icing on the cake, it is a place that is beyond imagination. Carved in the mountain, Pitões is there as it was! Everything still runs slowly, nature still rules, rough people give everything they have and houses are what we can call home. This is the grand finale, certain of which will bring him back. On this day we will take the opportunity to experience this village and surroundings.

    Guided walk in Pitões das Junias (10km |+410m).

    DAY 8: TRANSFER TO AIRPORT OR OTHER DESTINATION.

    On the last day, time permitting, we can explore even more the village of Pitões da Júnias or another place in the National Park.

    With the certainty that on this journey you have built unforgettable memories, the farewell will be nostalgic, Mountaineers!

    Registration Requirements:

    • Mountaineering Experience: Have experience in mountaineering or be accustomed to hiking in mountainous terrain.
    • Physical Fitness: Must have no physical limitations.
    • Balance and Altitude: Should have no balance issues or other altitude-related symptoms.
    • Safety Awareness: Ability to respect and recognize the dangers of the mountain environment.
